| Welcome to Zanar's English class for the Novice.
Since this section talked about correcting Grammar, let me show you the fine arts of the English language in places that a lot of people get wrong.
In this first lesson, we will be discussing the usages of the word 'You' (also knows as ''U'' and used by people who are too lazy or stupid to type out the whole word.) As we all know, of course, 'You' is used to refer to another person and/or his activities. It is one of the most common words in communication and also the most common word where people tend to make mistakes.
You & You're
Now, the word 'You' can be used and modified in numerous ways.
For instance:
"Hey, you!"
This usage of the word 'You' implies that you are calling out to someone and are trying to get his/her attention. However, It is considered to be rude to address someone in such a manor.
"You are a stupid incompetent brainless idiot with the IQ of an ice cube."
This usage of the word adds a little more than a simple cry for attention. The word used behind it, namely the word 'Are'. (Also knows as simply 'R' by the same people mentioned above) By doing this, the word 'You' is no longer used to address someone, but instead it refers to something about the person you are talking to, which in this case, is that you think this person is: 'a stupid incompetent brainless idiot with the IQ of an ice cube'.
Now, this form of the word can be typed out in different ways.
For instance:
It can simply be 'You are', but it can also be shortened into 'You're'. Using this form the sentence changes from:
"You are a stupid incompetent brainless idiot with the IQ of an ice cube."
Into:
"You're a stupid incompetent brainless idiot with the IQ of an ice cube."
Notice the different. This is where a lot of people go wrong into using the word. 'You're' always means 'You are' it's just a shortened version just like 'I'm' which is really 'I am'
Your
A lot of people mix up 'You're' with 'Your' but in truth these two words are completely different from each other. The word 'Your' mostly refers to a possession and is only used to address just that.
For instance:
"Your face is so ugly that even your mirror screams."
This usage refers to, as stated above, a possession which, in this case, is the face. 'Your' refers to the face in this sentence and tells us a little something about it. Now, if people were the make the common mistake of mixing this word with 'You're', then the sentence would be read/pronounced as this:
"You are face is so ugly that even your mirror screams."
Notice the difference, and error in this sentence. It is the most common mistake to occur, but if you think a little bit about the pronunciations, it really isn't so hard to prevent these mistakes.
Just remember that that 'You're' means 'You are' and everything will be all right.
This concludes Lesson 1. You have now taken your first step on the path of better grammar.
See you next time. You have been enlightened by the light that is Zanar. You may rejoice. | |
